There is one area however, that first time jewelry buyers often overlook—having a pre-purchase or post-purchase evaluation. Since the advent of the Internet, people have been lulled into a false sense of security because diamonds and other gems are sold with certificates of worth. However, a certificate is a piece of paper, and most jewelry retailers sell what’s on the piece of paper, which does not guarantee the item. If the evaluator who wrote the certificate works for the jewelry company, there is no guarantee that the certificate was written without bias. There will always be unscrupulous people in this world, and we must take precautions to not become victims. When you bring your diamond to our experienced gemologists for a pre-purchase evaluation, or to verify the certificate, we will ask you not to show the certificate to us until after the consultation. It's important for you to know our opinion of your diamond without any outside information playing a role in the process. WeI recently looked at two diamonds for a client, we graded one a VS2, and the other a VS1. Both had certificates from a major gem lab and both were graded internally flawless. We drew a diagram of the inclusions that were inside both stones, and with that our client was able to get his deposits back from both jewelry stores. He then bought a diamond from a different jeweler, saved thousands of dollars, and ended up with a prettier diamond. But just as importantly, the diamond our client bought was exactly as it was represented to be, and it didn't even have a certificate. It just proves having a diamond without a certificate can be better than having a diamond with an inaccurate certificate. If you are about to spend thousands of dollars on a diamond, from someone you've never dealt with before, our opinion of the diamond should be very important to you. Just remember the motto, "buyer beware," and realize a certificate is only a piece of paper. Also, don't share too much information with your appraiser; let us share our information with you.
